At Kings Rise Academy the intent of our curriculum is to celebrate diversity, improve health and raise aspirations by providing a high quality mathematical education which provides a foundation for understanding the world, ability to reason mathematically and develop an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics through a sense of number, enjoyment and the curiosity of Maths.
Our Maths Curriculum
At Kings Rise Academy, our Maths curriculum is designed to provide children with opportunities to:
- develop their mathematical fluency in a range of areas through a concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach.
- apply their understanding to be able to solve problems in a range of different contexts.
- explain their reasoning when identifying solutions to problems and when responding to mathematical statements.
Our Mathematical curriculum offers a vast range of experiences which are designed to provide pupils with the confidence and Mathematical understanding needed to enable them to celebrate their diversity, improve their health and raise their aspirations in our school and beyond as we believe Maths is essential to everyday life.
CPA Approach To Calculation
CPA Approach To Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
To help and motivate children to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas in our Maths lessons we implement the CPA approach. Each class has a range of resources to support learning and these are readily available for the children to use. We also have a central resource base that can be accessed when additional concrete resources are required.
To help support the teaching and learning of Maths and the CPA approach we follow the White Rose Hub sequences of learning to build children’s depth of understanding when teaching each mathematical skill. The blocking sequence has been adapted to suit the needs of our learners whilst still offering a broad and balanced curriculum.
We also use a variety of interactive and textbook resources from Abacus to encourage children to access the mastery curriculum of Maths.
Times Table Rock Star
‘Learning multiplication facts is an important foundation for learning different aspects of mathematics such as division, algebra, long multiplication, and even fractions.
For pupils that don't have a solid grasp of the times tables, they may find these other areas to be hard to understand as well.’
DfE, February 2018
When it comes to times tables, speed AND accuracy are important – the more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to do harder calculations. Times Table Rock Stars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help pupils master their times tables! To be a Times Table Rock Star you need to answer any multiplication fact up to 12×12 in less than 3 seconds!
